HEC Defers Implementation of New GRE/HAT Policy

ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has postponed the implementation of its revised policy regarding GRE and HAT tests for admissions in Level 7 and Level 8 academic programs.

According to an official notification issued by the commission, the requirement for GRE/HAT General and Subject Tests will not be enforced immediately, following requests from universities seeking additional time to adjust.

The HEC stated that the policy, which was earlier scheduled to take effect from the 2026 admissions cycle, will now be implemented from 2027 admissions onward.

The decision aims to provide universities sufficient time to prepare for the revised admission requirements and ensure a smooth transition.

In its statement, the commission added that it has temporarily suspended the earlier notification issued on May 13 regarding the test policy under the Education Testing Council (ETC), taking into account concerns raised by higher education institutions.

HEC said the move was made after reviewing feedback from universities to allow them to better align their admission systems with the updated framework.
