SANAA: An Indian-flagged merchant vessel sank in the Red Sea near Yemen after coming under a projectile attack, but all 14 crew members were rescued safely, according to international media reports.
Local authorities said the crew included 13 Indian nationals and one Yemeni citizen. They were rescued after the vessel was attacked south of the port city of Hodeidah.
India’s Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on social media platform X that the vessel was struck by a projectile near Yemeni waters.
Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemned the incident and called for an immediate end to attacks targeting commercial shipping in the region. New Delhi described the incident as an unprovoked attack.
Yemen’s state-run news agency blamed the attack on the Iran-backed Houthi group.
The incident comes amid continuing security concerns in the Red Sea, a key international shipping route. The Houthis have previously threatened maritime traffic in the region and claimed responsibility for attacks on oil tankers and energy infrastructure.
