Parliament turned into fish market during joint session

Session continues for just 20 minutes during which four govt bills bulldozed.

ISLAMABAD: The joint session of parliament on Friday became a fish market as the created rumpus in National Assembly chanting slogans and tearing the agenda papers.

The session started with a delay of over an hour at about 11am.  When the opposition leader Omar Ayub wanted to speak on a point of order, the speaker did not give him the floor. As a result, the opposition members stood on their seats and started shouting slogans. Due to the protest, the house looked like a pr fish market.

President Asif Ali Zardari had summoned the joint session of Parliament on the advice of the Prime Minister.

Speaking at outside Parliament House, PTI Chairman Barrister Gauhar Ali Khan said: “Today the government has put eight bills on the agenda, we will not be a part of today’s proceedings.”

During the rumpus, the opposition members sarted shouting slogans against the PECA amendment bill, terming it a ploy to punish journalists and suppress freedom of the press.

However, speaker continued the proceedings and the house passed some of the government legislation on the agenda.

The joint session passed the Trade Organizations Amendment Bill 2021, the Import and Export Regulation Amendment Bill, the National Institute of Technology Bill 2024, and the National Institute of Excellence Bill 2024.

Some bills were however deferred by the joint session of parliament, including the National Commission for Human Development Amendment Bill 2023, the National Commission for Human Development Amendment Bill 2023, the NFC Institute of Engineering and Technology Amendment Bill 2023, the National Skills University Islamabad Amendment Bill 2023 and the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology Islamabad Amendment Bill 2023.

The joint session of parliament lasted only 18 minutes.
