Judge hearing high profile cases goes on LPR

In letter to ministry and high court accountability judge says due to ill health wants to go on leave.

ISLAMABAD: Accountability court judge Muhammad Bashir has applied for leave prior retirement (LPR), according to an application he wrote to the Ministry of Law and the Islamabad High Court.

Judge Bashir had heard many high profile corruption cases against former president Asif Ali Zardari, ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif and currently the Toshakhana corruption case against Imran Khan.

With his going on leave, the immediate indictment of Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the Toshakhana case has been delayed. 

Sources told News Diplomacy that Bashir was going to retire on March 14, 2024, and has applied for leave from January 24 to March 14.

Judge Bashir had convicted former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz in the Azizia Still Mill refence case. He had also heard cases of corruption against former president Asif Ali Zardari.

The sources said that the judge was under pressure while hearing the corruption case against Imran Khan in Adiala jail.

With his going on leave, the proceedings in the Toshakhana case against Imran and his wife is likely to get delayed.
