Judgement in Sara Inam murder case reserved

Prosecution says Sara was tortured by her husband and had multiple injuries on her body.

ISLAMABAD: District and Sessions Judge Javed Nasir Rana on Saturday reserved judgement after completion of arguments from both the prosecution and defense sides in the murder case of Sara Inam, who was killed allegedly by her husband in a house in Islamabad.

During today’s hearing, counsel for Samina Shah, a maid of the alleged killer, pleaded her acquitted on the ground that there was no incriminating evidence against her.

The lawyer contended that no sample of Samina was taken so there wasn’t no question of her DNA matching with that of the deceased. Samina has been charged with assisting the alleged murderer in the crime.

Prosecutor Hassan Abbas said that it is not true that Sara Inam had only one injury mark on her body. Rather she had multiple wounds. He said that her husband had tortured Sara the whole night.

He said there were at least seven injuries including fractures of the body of Sara Inam from which she died and the contention of the defense that her death was due to heart attack is baseless.

Sara was a Canadian national and allegedly murdered by Shahnawaz, her husband and son of political commentator Ayaz Amir at his Chak Shahzad house in Islamabad a year ago.

Shahnawaz was arrested in connection with the case a day after the murder.

Earlier, the judge recorded the statement of the accused in the court. In the statement, he flatly denied his involvement in the murder of his wife.

He said that in July 2022 Sara married him without taking consent of her parents. He said his parents and first wife were also not happy with his second marriage.

Shahnawaz said that on the day of her murder, Sara came to his house, his mother prepared dinner and the three took dinner together very happily.

Then we went to sleep and at night Sara went to washroom and he fell asleep. At 7am the next day, he said, he went to bring breakfast from the market and came back at 9am.

He said when he came back Sara was not in her room and he looked for her and found her fallen unconscious in the tub of her bathroom.

The accused said he got terrified and informed his mother who was in another room. He said her mother telephoned his father who was in Chakwal. Later, police reached the house and he informed them about the incident in detail but the murder case was registered against him.

He said he had been framed in the case. He said his father Ayaz Amir is a journalist and speaks in favor of the PTI and its jailed chief Imran Khan due to which the previous PDM government implicated his family in the case

He claimed that Sara had died after falling in the bathroom. He said he was innocent and would submit all the evidence in the court in the next hearing of the case.
