Judicial inquiry urged in police killing of blasphemy suspect

Civil society activities say they do not trust report of inquiry conducted by police in Umerkot incident.

KARACHI: Civil society representatives and activists have called upon the government to constitute a judicial commission to probe into the killing of a medical doctor by police on the suspicion of blasphemy.

Dr Shah Nawaz was killed by police after he was arrested following the registration of a blasphemy case against him on the complaint of clerics in the Umerkot town of Sindh last month. The police claimed that Nawaz was carrying a gun and attacked police and was killed in retaliation.

Speaking at press conference at Karachi Press Club, the representatives of civil society and social workers said that it was clear how Dr Nawaz was extra-judicially killed in police custody. It was also unfortunate that the dead body of the doctor was burnt by local people and his relatives were not allowed to bury the body while the police remained as a silent spectator.

The civil society representatives at the press conference said that they did not believe in the police report and the government should constitute a judicial commission to probe the incident and take action against the culprits so no such incident would happen in the future.

The also demanded it that the names of the police officers should also be included in the police case and action should be taken against all those involved.

The civil society representatives expressed serious concern and said that people were being killed in the name of religion in the province of Sindh and the government had failed to stop human rights violations and protect the life of citizens.
