WASHINGTON: The White House has indicated that the next round of Iran–United States negotiations may take place in Islamabad, highlighting Pakistan’s growing diplomatic role as a key intermediary in the ongoing talks.
During a press briefing, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated that discussions between the United States and Iran are continuing in a “constructive and ongoing” manner, with Pakistan serving as the primary mediator throughout the process. She praised Islamabad’s efforts in facilitating communication between the two sides, describing Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement as “commendable” and “effective.”
According to the spokesperson, President Donald Trump has expressed cautious optimism regarding the prospects of a potential agreement, emphasizing that the negotiations are progressing with clear positions defined by the United States.
Leavitt also clarified that reports suggesting a formal U.S. request to extend a ceasefire were inaccurate. She reiterated that Washington believes reaching an agreement remains in the interest of all parties involved.
Significantly, she noted that while several countries have offered to assist in mediation, the United States prefers to continue the process through Pakistan, which it considers a trusted and central channel for dialogue.
Diplomatic observers suggest that holding the next phase of talks in Islamabad would mark a notable shift, further elevating Pakistan’s role in regional conflict resolution and Middle East diplomacy.
