UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has called for an immediate ceasefire and intensified diplomatic efforts to address the worsening situation in eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo during a session of the United Nations Security Council.
Addressing the Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmad expressed deep concern over the escalating violence, worsening humanitarian crisis, and the growing number of displaced people in the conflict-hit region.
He stressed the urgent need for full implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions, stating that a durable ceasefire is essential for lasting stability in the region.
Pakistan welcomed ongoing international diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation, including African Union mediation, the Washington Process, and the Doha Framework, noting that such initiatives could complement UN efforts toward a political solution.
The Pakistani envoy also reaffirmed support for the role of MONUSCO (UN peacekeeping mission), emphasizing its importance in facilitating ceasefire implementation under appropriate conditions.
He highlighted illegal mining and smuggling of natural resources as major drivers of instability in eastern Congo, calling for stronger regional cooperation and transparent supply chains to ensure that resources benefit local populations.
The ambassador reiterated Pakistan’s support for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and urged the international community to act collectively for sustainable peace in the region.
