Pakistan Decides to Import Additional Electricity from Iran

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has taken a significant step in boosting its electricity supply by approving the import of additional power from Iran.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has authorized the purchase of 100 megawatts (MW) of electricity from Iran, in addition to the existing 104 MW already being supplied.

The decision has been forwarded to the federal government for notification. Under the agreement, payments to Iranian suppliers will be made in U.S. dollars, and the tariff will be linked to the OPEC crude oil basket price.

For the additional 100 MW, a monthly Take or Pay clause of 15 million kilowatt-hours has also been approved. NEPRA has granted approval for Amendments 7, 8, and 9 to the electricity supply agreement with Iran, which cover changes in supply terms and the tariff structure.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) had filed the application with NEPRA, requesting approval for the new tariff for the existing 104 MW supply as well as the additional 100 MW. The application included details of the amendments specifying changes to the electricity supply and tariff arrangements.

With this move, Pakistan’s total imported electricity from Iran will rise to 204 MW, strengthening the country’s power supply and providing a transparent pricing mechanism linked to global oil prices.
