LAHORE: The government of Punjab has approved sweeping new measures to curb cybercrime and online harassment, particularly targeting cases involving women and children.
According to sources, the decisions were taken during a high-level meeting chaired by the provincial chief minister. Under the new policy, police will be granted direct authority to take action in cybercrime cases, allowing First Information Reports (FIRs) to be registered without delays.
Previously, law enforcement agencies had limited powers in such matters, often leading to procedural hurdles and slow response times. The new measures aim to provide victims with quicker access to complaint registration and legal recourse.
The government has also approved the establishment of a dedicated department, modeled on the Crime Control Department (CCD), to monitor and tackle digital crimes more effectively.
Officials said the initiative would significantly strengthen protection for women and youth against online harassment, blackmail, and other forms of digital abuse, marking a major step toward improving cyber safety in Pakistan.
