ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has extended the duration for SIM disowning from 60 days to 365 days in an effort to curb the issuance of illegal mobile SIMs.

In a statement issued by the authority, it said that the step has been taken to make measures against illegal SIM issuance and unauthorized registrations more effective.

The PTA further clarified that, under the revised policy, any newly activated SIM cannot be disowned from a user’s name before the completion of one year.

Citizens have been advised to exercise caution during biometric verification when obtaining mobile SIMs.

For privacy and identity protection, users are encouraged to regularly check the number of SIMs registered against their Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC). This can be done through the official website cnic.sims.pk or by sending their CNIC number (without dashes) to 668 via SMS.

The PTA also urged citizens to immediately report any unauthorized or suspicious SIM registrations to the relevant mobile operator. It emphasized that users should ensure only personally used SIMs are registered under their CNICs.
