Senate passes resolution to delay Feb 8 elections

There were only 14 senators in the house of 100 when resolution was passed.

ISLAMABAD: In a very strange move, the Senate of Pakistan on Friday passed a resolution seeking a delay in the February 8 general elections in the country due to security reasons.

Media reported that there were only 14 members in the house of 100 when the resolution was moved.

The members supporting the resolution were unaware of any such move minutes before the resolution was moved and then passed in haste.

Senator Dilawar Khan tabled the resolution which was opposed by information minister Murtaza Solangi and PML-N Senator Afnanullah Khan.

The mover of the resolution said due to security concerns the elections should be delayed. He said different political parties have already expressed concerns over the issue.

There has been an increase in terror attacks in Khyber Pakthunkhwa and Balochistan provinces where security forces were fighting the terrorists.

Moreover, in February most of the areas of the country would be in grip of cold weather and some areas even blocked due to snowfall.

The resolution stated, “The Senate of Pakistan hereby resolves that the conduct of elections without addressing legitimate concerns, facilitating sufficient opportunities for election campaign and guaranteeing the safety of politicians and citizens would amount to violation of fundamental rights.”

Less than an hour later, the Senate Secretariat also issued a notification asking for the implementation of the resolution and submit a report.

The copy of the resolution was also sent to authorities concerned.
