ISLAMABAD: Senior journalist Matiullah Jan was on Saturday granted bail three days after he was picked up by unknown people and later shown arrested in a fake case.
An Anti-Terrorism Court later gave him in the the custody of the police for two days after police claimed that Jan had snatched a rifle from police at a check post and threatened police officials and injured one of them.
However, lawyers challenged the physical remand in Islamabad High Court which suspended it. This led to the submission of a bail application by his lawyers in the same Anti-Terrorism Court.
On Saturday, the journalist was produced before the judge. The ATC judge remarked that he is sending the accused on judicial remand. However, he was informed that an application for the release of the journalist had been filed.
The lawyers pleaded that the application for bail may be hear immediately. The judge first remarked that the bail plea was of seven pages and then took it up.
The ATC judge later granted bail to the journalist and ordered him to submit a surety bond of Rs10,000.
