LONDON: Voting is underway across the United Kingdom today in a major round of local and regional elections, with millions of voters casting ballots to choose representatives for Scotland and Wales’ parliaments as well as 136 local councils in England.
More than 25,000 candidates are contesting 5,066 seats in what is being described as a significant test of the country’s political direction. Polling began at 7 a.m. local time and will continue until 10 p.m., while vote counting is scheduled to start on Friday morning.
A notable feature of this year’s elections is the strong participation of British Pakistanis and Muslim candidates, particularly in Birmingham, where more than 170 candidates from these communities are contesting seats.
Analysts say the elections are being closely watched as they may influence the broader political landscape in the UK, including party standings at both local and regional levels.
Officials have described the polls as an important democratic exercise, with results expected to reflect shifting voter priorities across different regions of the country.
