NEW YORK: The United Nations General Assembly has elected five countries as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for a two-year term beginning January 1, 2027.
The newly elected members are:
Austria
Portugal
Trinidad and Tobago
Zimbabwe and
Kyrgyzstan.
These countries will serve on the Security Council for the 2027–28 term, taking part in key decisions related to international peace and security.
The Security Council consists of 15 members, including five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members elected for staggered two-year terms.
