Trump administration suspends all foreign aid programs

Only emergency food and military funding to go on for Israel and Egypt, say reports.

The new administration of US President Donald Trump has suspended aid to almost all countries, including Ukraine, except for emergency food and military funding for Israel and Egypt.

According to US media, the Trump administration has suspended all foreign aid programs including to Ukraine, Taiwan and Jordan. The program has been initially suspended for 90 days, except for Egypt and Israel.

All US diplomatic and consular missions of  have been told by State Department to stop all aid programs immediately.

The administration will now personally review these programs and decide whether to change them or stop them altogether. The State Department has not yet confirmed the report. However, according to media reports, this news has caused a stir among the employees of the US State Department. According to US media, the order will apply to all previously approved programs.

The State Department’s move will also affect the anti-retroviral drugs program against AIDS in Africa, which has been running since the George Bush Jr. era. The U.S. gave $64 billion in aid to various countries in 2023.

At the end of December 2024, Joe Biden had promised to send $2.5 billion worth of weapons to Ukraine, including $1.2 billion worth of weapons stored in U.S. warehouses. The other billion-dollar weapons were to be manufactured and shipped by contract. Halting aid to Ukraine is likely to make it easier for the United States and Russia to end the war in Ukraine.

In December, President Biden approved $571.03 million in defense aid for Taiwan. China had expressed serious concerns.
