Veteran PTV Newscaster Ishrat Fatima Passes Away

ISLAMABAD: Renowned broadcaster and legendary PTV newscaster Ishrat Fatima has passed away, marking the end of an era in Pakistan’s broadcast journalism.

Ishrat Fatima was among the most familiar and respected faces of Pakistan Television (PTV) during the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s. For decades, she graced television screens nationwide as the anchor of the 9 p.m. Urdu news bulletin, a program that became a staple in countless Pakistani households.

Her broadcasting career began at Radio Pakistan, where she hosted the popular sports program “Khel Aur Khilari” (Sports and Players). Initially selected to present the weather segment on PTV, her articulate delivery, calm demeanor, and commanding presence soon earned her a place behind the news desk, where she became a household name.

Ishrat Fatima remained associated with PTV until 2007, after which she was transferred to Radio Pakistan. Later in her career, she was also part of Voice of America (VOA). Known not only for her impeccable news reading but also for her distinctive nose ring, she became a cultural icon of her time.

Her passing is being mourned by colleagues, viewers, and media professionals across the country. Ishrat Fatima’s contribution to journalism and broadcasting will be remembered for generations, as she paved the way for many women in the industry and set high standards of professionalism.
