LONDON: A UK court has sentenced 15 men to a combined total of 188 years in prison for the prolonged sexual abuse and exploitation of a minor girl in Bradford, West Yorkshire.
According to West Yorkshire Police, the victim—aged between 14 and 18 at the time—was repeatedly abused by the group between 2007 and 2011. The crimes came to light years later after a review of missing persons and child exploitation records.
Police began re-examining old cases in 2015, which revealed that the victim had gone missing multiple times during the period of abuse. Further investigation confirmed that she had been targeted by an organized group, leading to a formal inquiry launched in 2016.
The investigation, described as complex and lengthy, involved reviewing historic police records, mobile phone data, witness testimonies, and other evidence. Due to the number of accused and the nature of charges, the case was divided into multiple trials held over the past two years.
Reporting restrictions had been imposed during the proceedings to ensure fair trials. However, the court lifted these restrictions on Wednesday, allowing the publication of the defendants’ identities and sentencing details.
The court found all 15 men guilty of serious sexual offenses, including multiple counts of rape. Individual sentences ranged from eight to 17 years, totaling 188 years collectively.
In her statement following the verdict, the victim said the abuse had a lasting impact on her childhood and youth, adding that the emotional scars would remain with her for life.
Senior investigating officer Vicky Greenbank praised the victim’s courage and resilience, stating that crimes against children are unacceptable and will be pursued relentlessly.
The court observed that the victim had been systematically exploited and failed to receive the protection she needed at the time, while the perpetrators took advantage of her vulnerability for their own gain.
