WASHINGTON: A protest rally was held by the PTI outside the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington to press the international lender to link its loan package to Pakistan with a proper investigation into alleged rigging in the February 8 general elections.
The participants of the protest also demanded that the government in Pakistan should be asked to release PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan. The protesters asked IMF to set harsh conditions for the government of Pakistan before approving a loan for the country. According to a TV report, the protesters were carrying banners and placards inscribed with demands for the release of Imran Khan and against the Pakistan army.
The report claimed that the PTI leadership had tasked Shehbaz Gill, a close associate of the former prime minister and party founder, to arrange the rally. Help was also taken from national and international NGOs to arrange the rally.
It may be noted that the protest by the PTI has been arranged at a time when an IMF delegation is in Pakistan and holding talks with the government team for the release of the $1.1 billion third tranche of the standby agreement.
