LAHORE: The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a fresh alert over possible flooding, urban flooding and landslides as the province braces for further monsoon rains.
According to the PDMA, water levels in the Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej rivers remain normal, while low-level flooding has been reported in the Indus at Kalabagh and Chashma. Moderate flooding is also being recorded at Wazirabad’s Nallah Palkhu, while low-level flooding has been reported at Nallah Basantar in Narowal.
The fourth spell of monsoon rains is expected to continue until August 5, with further rainfall in upper catchment areas likely to increase water flows in eastern rivers and nearby streams.
PDMA Director General Safeer Anwar Jappa warned of a risk of urban flooding in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Multan. Landslides are also possible in Murree, Galiyat and other hilly areas.
The PDMA urged residents living in riverbeds and vulnerable areas to move to safer locations. Relief camps have been established in flood-affected areas, with basic facilities and medicines being provided.
Citizens have also been advised to avoid recreational activities near rivers, canals and streams and to keep children away from waterways amid the ongoing monsoon spell.
