ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for a comprehensive assessment of the World Bank’s proposals aimed at improving fiscal coordination between the federal and provincial governments as part of broader efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s economic framework.
During a meeting with a World Bank delegation headed by Country Director Bolormaa Amgaabazar, the Prime Minister reviewed key aspects of the institution’s report on “Strengthening Fiscal Federalism in Pakistan” and discussed measures to enhance financial management and public service delivery.
He reiterated that the government is pursuing reforms to stabilize the economy and lay the foundation for sustainable economic growth. He also emphasized that cooperation between the federation and provinces, within the constitutional framework, is essential for national development.
The World Bank delegation briefed the Prime Minister on the report’s findings, which examine Pakistan’s fiscal federal structure after the 18th Constitutional Amendment and the 7th National Finance Commission (NFC) Award.
The report highlights areas including revenue generation, public expenditure management, federal-provincial financial relations, institutional coordination, and the effective use of public resources.
The delegation presented policy recommendations aimed at improving fiscal discipline, strengthening governance, enhancing public services, and promoting better coordination among government institutions.
Appreciating the World Bank’s analysis and international comparisons, PM Shehbaz said such studies provide important guidance for informed decision-making.
He directed the formation of a high-level committee to review the report in detail and consult all relevant stakeholders, including provincial governments, before considering practical steps in the larger national interest.
