UNITED NATIONS: The UN Security Council has strongly condemned the Swat terrorist attack that killed at least 16 people.
The suicide bombing struck outside a police station in Kabal, Swat district, on August 2. Most of the victims were civilians, while dozens of others suffered injuries.
The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the attack, according to the Security Council.
The council members expressed sympathy to the victims’ families and the government and people of Pakistan. They also wished the injured a full and speedy recovery.
UN urges action against attackers
According to the statement issued by Spokesperson of UN Secretary General, the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism remains one of the gravest threats to international peace and security.
It called for the perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors to face justice. The council also urged states to cooperate with Pakistan in bringing those responsible to justice.
The members stressed that states must meet their obligations under international law and relevant UN resolutions.
They reiterated that all acts of terrorism remain criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, location, timing or perpetrators.
The council also urged all states to combat terrorist threats while respecting the UN Charter and international law.
It specifically cited obligations concerning human rights, refugees and humanitarian protection.
