MAKKAH: Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye on Friday signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, under which an armed attack against any one of the three countries will be regarded as an attack against all three, marking a significant step towards strengthening collective security and defence cooperation.
The landmark agreement was signed by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Summit for Joint Defence.
The agreement reflects the three countries’ shared commitment to strengthening collective deterrence against any act of aggression and promoting peace, security and stability in the region and beyond.
Under the pact, the three states will enhance cooperation across various areas of defence, while maintaining close coordination to safeguard their collective security interests.
The agreement is being viewed as an important development in the strategic relations among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, which are rooted in longstanding historical ties, brotherhood and Islamic solidarity.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Saudi Arabia at the invitation of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman received the Turkish president and Pakistani prime minister at Al-Safa Palace in Makkah, where the trilateral summit was held.
During the summit, the three leaders reviewed the distinguished relations between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye and discussed a range of regional and international issues of mutual interest.
The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening strategic cooperation and building upon the existing defence partnership between the three countries.
The Makkah Joint Defence Agreement is intended to provide a stronger framework for collective security cooperation and contribute to a more secure, stable and prosperous future for the region.
