MIAMI: Defending FIFA World Cup champions Argentina survived a major scare to defeat Cape Verde 3–2 after extra time in a dramatic Round of 32 clash, securing their place in the Round of 16 after one of the tournament’s most thrilling matches.

Played in Miami, the encounter pushed Argentina to their limits as the underdogs from Cape Verde twice came from behind to level the score and nearly forced the contest into a penalty shootout.

Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 29th minute to give Argentina a 1–0 lead before Cape Verde responded through Diroe Duarte in the 59th minute.

Argentina regained the advantage in extra time when Leonardo Martínez found the net, but Cape Verde struck again through Sidney Lopes Cabral, making it 2–2 and setting up a tense finish.

The decisive moment came in the second half of extra time when Cape Verde defender Dany Borges inadvertently turned Messi’s corner into his own net, handing Argentina a 3–2 lead that they held until the final whistle.

Cape Verde launched relentless attacks in the closing minutes but failed to find a third equalizer despite creating several dangerous opportunities.

Messi’s side will now face Egypt in the Round of 16 on July 7 in Atlanta.

Although eliminated, Cape Verde won widespread admiration for their fearless display against the defending champions.

Their spirited performance, highlighted by two superb goals and an energetic attacking approach, earned praise from fans and pundits alike, with many describing the match as one of the best of the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far.
