ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has said that the electronic signing ceremony of a proposed agreement between the United States and Iran is expected to take place on Sunday.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar held a telephone conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan. The two leaders discussed regional developments, US–Iran negotiations, and upcoming diplomatic engagements in the region.
Both sides welcomed the progress of the ongoing US–Iran talks as they move into their final stage and expressed hope that the expected electronic signing ceremony would contribute to lasting peace and stability in the region.
The Saudi foreign minister appreciated Pakistan’s continued efforts in facilitating dialogue, mediation, and diplomacy during the negotiation process.
However, the Foreign Office did not provide details regarding the venue or format of the electronic signing ceremony.
The statement further noted that both ministers also discussed preparations for the upcoming four-nation regional foreign ministers’ meeting (R-4) scheduled later this month in Egypt, along with other matters of mutual interest. They agreed to maintain close coordination to promote peace, stability, and regional cooperation.
Meanwhile, sources said arrangements for an electronic or virtual signing of the agreement are being finalized, with Pakistan reportedly playing a central mediating role in the process.
According to these sources, various options for the virtual signing are under consideration, including a possible Zoom meeting. Pakistan is expected to participate as a key mediator, along with other countries involved in backchannel diplomacy.
The proposed meeting may include participation from Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Qatar, Egypt, and other regional stakeholders. Sources also said the agreement may be titled the “Islamabad Declaration” or “Memorandum of Understanding Islamabad,” while technical and procedural details are still being finalized.
Sources further claimed that the signing is expected to take place on Sunday, with some reports also referencing remarks attributed to US President Donald Trump regarding the agreement on social media.
