LAHORE: FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation have called for urgent amendments to the constitution of the Pakistan Football Federation, stressing the need to align it with international standards and governance requirements.
The global and regional football bodies emphasized that any form of third-party interference in PFF affairs would not be tolerated. They urged Pakistani football authorities to ensure that the federation’s constitution is updated in line with FIFA and AFC regulations to guarantee transparency and independence.
Rolf Tanner, head of FIFA Member Associations, stated that constitutional reforms are essential for long-term stability. He noted that amendments to the 2014 constitution remain a mandatory requirement set by both FIFA and AFC, adding that clear distribution of powers within the federation would help minimize risks of corruption.
Tanner further highlighted that strong governance structures are key to achieving better performance on the field, warning that outdated systems could hinder the development of the sport in Pakistan.
Meanwhile, Sonam Jigmi, Senior Manager for South Asia at the AFC, said the reform process would be transparent and based on consultation. He cautioned that any federation failing to meet FIFA and AFC requirements could face consequences, including the loss of its rights and privileges.
Mohsin Gilani, President of the PFF, acknowledged that constitutional amendments have been pending for nearly a decade.
He admitted that other federations have moved far ahead and stressed that reforms are now unavoidable to bring Pakistan football in line with global standards.
