SAN DIEGO: A shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego left five people dead on Monday, including two teenage suspects, authorities said.

The attackers opened fire outside the mosque shortly before noon. They killed three men, including a security guard, before fleeing the scene. Police later found both suspects dead inside a nearby vehicle from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said investigators were treating the incident as a possible hate crime. The FBI joined the investigation, although officials have not confirmed a motive.

The Islamic Center is the largest mosque in San Diego County. The attack occurred days before Eidul Azha celebrations, increasing fears within the Muslim community.

Security Guard Credited With Preventing More Bloodshed

Police said officers reached the mosque within minutes after emergency calls reported an active shooter.

Authorities found three victims outside the mosque building. Chief Wahl praised the slain security guard for likely preventing further casualties.

Children attending the mosque’s day school escaped unharmed. Officers safely evacuated them from the complex during the chaos.

Investigators said one suspect’s mother had earlier contacted police. She reported her son missing, suicidal, and carrying several firearms from her home.

Officials said investigators recovered writings and evidence suggesting anti-Muslim hostility. However, police have not publicly disclosed complete details.

A landscaper working nearby also reported being shot at during the incident. He survived without injuries.

California Governor Gavin Newsom and President Donald Trump were briefed on the shooting, according to local officials.

The attack renewed concerns over violence targeting places of worship across the United States. Muslim leaders in San Diego called for unity and stronger protection for religious communities.
