ISLAMABAD: The Human Rights Council of Pakistan has strongly condemned the recent increase in petroleum product prices, expressing serious concern over its impact on low and middle-income groups.
In a statement issued on Friday, a spokesperson for the organization said that the rise in fuel prices will directly affect daily life, leading to further increases in the cost of essential commodities such as flour, pulses, vegetables, milk, medicines, and other basic goods.
The statement warned that the burden will be particularly severe on rickshaw drivers, daily wage laborers, transport workers, students, and the salaried middle class, who are already struggling due to inflation and limited income opportunities.
The statement urged the government to immediately reverse the recent price hike, reduce unnecessary privileges of the elite, and ensure relief for the public. It also called for strict action against unjustified increases in transport fares and commodity prices.
Emphasizing a human-centered approach to economic policymaking, the organization said that citizens’ basic right to a dignified life must be prioritized in all financial decisions.
The statement concluded by urging authorities to consider public hardship and adopt policies that ease economic pressure on ordinary citizens.
