ICC to Consider Dual Ball Use in Test Matches

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is expected to review several major rule changes in its upcoming meeting, including the potential use of both red and pink balls in a single Test match and the introduction of technological assistance to identify illegal bowling actions.

If approved, the proposed changes would come into effect from October 1, 2026.

According to reports, a proposal discussed during the Chief Executives Committee (CEC) virtual meeting on May 21 suggests that in case of weather interruptions during a Test match, especially when play continues under floodlights, the red ball may be replaced with a pink ball.

The change would only be implemented if both teams agree and umpires grant approval, similar to the Decision Review System (DRS) consent procedure.

Another key proposal involves using Hawk-Eye technology to assist umpires in identifying illegal bowling actions during matches. The system would help detect bowlers exceeding the 15-degree arm flex limit in real time.

The ICC is also considering reducing the break between innings in T20 Internationals from 20 minutes to 15 minutes.

Additionally, there is a proposal to allow head coaches in One Day Internationals to communicate with players on the field during drinks breaks, a feature already permitted in T20 cricket.
