Judgement says murder of Pakistani journalist in 2022 by police was not due to Identity mistake

NAIROBI: A court in Kenya has ordered the payment of compensation to the family of Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif who was killed by the Kenyan police in 2022.

The high court of the country in its judgement said that the murder of the journalist by the police was not a result of mistaken identity as claimed by the police. The court ordered payment of 21,700,000 Pakistani rupees to the family of the deceased.

The high court also ordered legal action against the police personnel who opened fire on the vehicle of the Pakistani journalist resulting in his death on a highway near Nairobi on October 23, 2022.

Meanwhile, the widow of the journalist said that the Kenyan court provided justice to her and her children but the family was still waiting justice in Pakistan.

Arshad Sharif, a supporter of former prime minister Imran Khan, left Pakistan soon after the ouster of the PTI government. He was staying in Dubai but during a visit to Kenya was shot dead on a highway near Nairobi by the local police.
