LNG reference against Abbasi, Ismail withdrawn

Accountability court in Islamabad acquits Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Mifta Ismail after withdrawal of case.

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and ex-federal minister Mifta Ismail were on Tuesday acquitted in the LNG reference case.

The accountability court in Islamabad acquitted the two after National Accountability court withdrew the reference it had filed against them years back.

It showed that NAB had filed the case on political grounds at the behest of others.

According to the details of the reference, the LNG import contract case had been constituted in 2019 when the PTI was in power against 10 personas, including Abbasi, former finance minister Miftah Ismail and former Pakistan State Oil managing director Sheikh Imranul Haq.

For decades, NAB has been used to target politicians by implicating them in different corruption cases. These politicians included political leaders Asif Ali Zardari, Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif.

But even after spending millions of rupees from the public exchequer the accountability watchdog failed to prove the cases or withdrew them on political grounds.
