LOS ANGELES: Michael, the biographical film based on the life of music icon Michael Jackson, has become the highest-grossing biopic of all time after surpassing $1 billion at the global box office.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film overtook the worldwide earnings of Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), which grossed $911 million, and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which earned $977 million globally.
The film stars Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, in the lead role, while Juliano Krue Valdi portrays the singer as a child. The cast also includes Colman Domingo, Nia Long, and Jessica Sula.
According to reports, Michael earned a record $217 million worldwide during its opening week, marking the biggest opening ever for a musical biopic.
While the film received mixed reviews from critics, scoring 40% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences responded enthusiastically, giving it a 97% audience score.
The biopic chronicles Jackson’s rise to global fame, his early life, family background, career achievements and the challenges he faced throughout his professional journey.
