MONTREAL: Two people, including a police officer, were killed in a shooting incident in the Canadian city of Montreal, according to local authorities.
One other person was injured in the attack, which prompted a swift police response.
Officials said the incident occurred in a residential area identified as a Jewish neighbourhood, where an armed suspect opened fire before police arrived at the scene. Law enforcement personnel engaged the attacker, who was subsequently killed in the exchange.
Police confirmed that among the deceased was a 34-year-old officer who had been serving with the force since 2021. The second victim was identified as a civilian, named Michael Mizrahi, according to initial reports.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the attack and are collecting evidence from the scene. The area was cordoned off as emergency teams secured the site and assisted the injured individual, whose condition has not yet been disclosed.
Officials have not yet indicated whether the shooting was a targeted attack or a random act of violence, but said all possibilities are being examined as part of the ongoing inquiry.
