NEW YORK: A 56-year-old grandmother died after falling into an uncovered manhole in Midtown Manhattan late Monday night, authorities said. The incident occurred near Fifth Avenue’s luxury shopping district, raising serious safety concerns.
Police identified the victim as Donike Gocaj of Briarcliff Manor in Westchester County. She reportedly fell into the open utility hole moments after exiting her parked SUV near East 52nd Street and Fifth Avenue.
Emergency responders found Gocaj unconscious inside the manhole around 11:20 p.m. They rushed her to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where doctors pronounced her dead.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic and horrifying. One bystander said Gocaj screamed repeatedly for help after the fall. Another witness claimed the area lacked cones, warning signs, or barricades.
Questions mount over uncovered manhole
Authorities have not explained why the manhole remained uncovered in one of Manhattan’s busiest areas. Reports said the cover was later found several feet away from the opening.
Con Edison confirmed it is investigating the incident. The company said public safety remains its top priority and expressed condolences to the victim’s family.
Family members said they were devastated and demanded answers. Relatives described Gocaj as a loving mother and grandmother.
The city medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death. Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
