Over 50 Migrants Feared Dead After Boat Capsizes Off Libyan Coast

TRIPOLI: At least 51 migrants are feared dead after a boat carrying people attempting to reach Europe capsized off the coast of Libya last week, according to reports from migration monitoring groups.

The vessel overturned on June 12 in the Mediterranean Sea near the eastern part of the North African country. The incident has once again highlighted the deadly risks faced by migrants attempting dangerous sea crossings toward Europe.

According to the Abreen group, which monitors migrant movements in eastern Libya, 10 people survived the tragedy. So far, 11 bodies have been recovered, while around 40 people remain missing and are presumed dead.

Libya remains a major transit point for migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean, often in overcrowded and unsafe boats operated by human traffickers. Thousands of migrants have died in similar incidents in recent years.

Search and recovery efforts are ongoing, but hopes of finding additional survivors are increasingly slim.
