UNITED NATIONS: Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad on Monday condemned drone attacks targeting the UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Power Plant and Saudi Arabia during a UN Security Council briefing on the Middle East.

Addressing the council, the Pakistani permanent representative to United Nations called the attacks “grave violations” of international law and warned against escalating regional tensions.

Pakistan expressed full solidarity with the United Arab Emirates after the reported drone strike on the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant on May 17. Islamabad also reaffirmed support for Saudi Arabia following separate drone attacks targeting the kingdom.

The ambassador said the attacks violated the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both Gulf states. He warned that such actions threatened regional peace and stability.

Pakistan warns against targeting nuclear facilities

The Pakistani envoy stressed that attacks on nuclear facilities violated international humanitarian law, the UN Charter, and IAEA safety principles.

He said civilian nuclear infrastructure must never become a target under any circumstances. He described the protection of nuclear installations as an established international norm.

Pakistan also raised concerns over increasing attacks on sensitive nuclear sites worldwide. The envoy urged the international community to address the legal and security implications of such incidents.

He warned that attacks on nuclear facilities could trigger catastrophic humanitarian and environmental consequences across the region.

Islamabad calls for diplomacy and restraint

Pakistan urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid actions that could deepen instability in the Middle East.

The envoy said dialogue and diplomacy remained the only viable path toward de-escalation and lasting regional peace.

He also highlighted Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement efforts involving concerned parties. The ambassador thanked regional partners and the UN Secretary-General for supporting those initiatives.

Reaffirming Islamabad’s position, the envoy said Pakistan would continue facilitating dialogue for peaceful dispute resolution in the region.
