Pakistan for G-77, China strategy to meet world challenges

Ambassador Munir Akram says trade a game changer for developing countries to join developed world.

NEW YORK: Pakistan has stressed the need for devising a strategy by the G-77 and China to tackle world challenges and help member countries to achieve SDGs and address climate change issues.  

The need was expressed by Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations Ambassador Munir Akram while addressing a function held to hand over the chair of G-77 and China to Iraq  here on Monday.

The ambassador highlighted the priorities of the developing nations and said that development finances and making technological developments in consonance with the climate change issues were important.

He told the gathering that there shortfalls of 4.3 trillion dollars in meeting the targets of financial assistance to meet the development targets and 1.5 trillion dollars needs for meeting climate change challenges in the developing countries.

Ambassador Munir Akram said that the global South was required to increase its grants, assistance and financial aid to meet the challenges in the developing countries.

He also stressed the need for the developed nations to fulfill their promises made for financial assistance to developing nations.

Terming trade a game changer for developing countries to join the developed world, Ambassador Akram called for opening new doors of access for export of developing countries while preparing for trade protectionism at the same time.
