Pakistan Set for 5G Launch Amid High Limited Device Availability

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is accelerating preparations for the nationwide launch of 5G internet services, with officials expecting the rollout to begin by mid-August this year.

However, the limited availability of 5G-compatible mobile phones and heavy taxation on imported devices remain major challenges to the project.

Telecom companies have proposed that the government introduce installment-based schemes to help consumers purchase 5G smartphones. They have also suggested restricting SIM card issuance to loan defaulters as part of the financing framework.

According to sources, iPhone users in Pakistan may not immediately benefit from 5G services, as Apple is expected to enable official 5G support in the country by 2027. Officials say high import duties have significantly limited the iPhone market in Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Samsung and several other manufacturers already offer 5G-enabled smartphones in the country.

Earlier this year, the government raised approximately $507 million through the auction of 5G spectrum licenses. Telecom operators Jazz, Zong, and Ufone acquired various frequency bands during the auction.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said a total of 480 megahertz of spectrum was sold, with Jazz emerging as the largest buyer after securing 190 megahertz.

Telecom companies stated that the initial rollout of 5G services will begin in selected locations before expanding gradually across the country. Jazz officials said the company plans to launch services at around 1,000 sites initially, with the number expected to increase to 2,500 by the end of the year.

Industry experts noted that internet penetration in Pakistan remains lower than in many regional countries, but usage is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years due to increasing demand for platforms such as YouTube and TikTok.

Representatives of the telecom sector have urged the government to reduce taxes, arguing that the nearly 45 percent tax burden on the industry is hindering growth and slowing the realization of the country’s “Digital Pakistan” vision.
