ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will continue to play a constructive and active role in promoting peace and stability in the region, said the Foreign Office on Wednesday.
During a weekly media briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi said that the President of Iran visited Pakistan on a one-day official trip at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and held important meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari and the prime minister.
He added that during formal talks, the leadership of both countries reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation in various sectors.
The spokesperson further revealed that negotiations between Iran and the United States were held in Switzerland’s Bürgenstock area with Pakistan playing a mediating role, while a second round of talks also took place on June 21. Pakistan was represented by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
According to the Foreign Office, three special technical working groups have been formed for the next phase of negotiations. One group will focus on Iran’s nuclear program, the second on sanctions and frozen assets, while the third will review the situation in Lebanon.
Tahir Hussain Andrabi said that future stages of the dialogue will be guided by the recommendations of these groups. He emphasized that Pakistan supports dialogue, cooperation, and diplomatic solutions among all parties.
He also noted that multiple countries have appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts, adding that the international community’s recognition of Pakistan’s constructive role is encouraging.
The spokesperson further said that Pakistan and Qatar’s technical teams will remain in contact with their counterparts from the United States and Iran to ensure continued progress in negotiations.
He also highlighted a meeting of foreign ministers from Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye held on June 21, where discussions were held on the outcomes of the talks and the future roadmap.
Responding to a question, the spokesperson said that reports have been received regarding Pakistani nationals being held hostage in Somalia. Pakistan is in contact with Somali authorities and relevant institutions, and all possible diplomatic and consular efforts are being made to ensure their safe recovery.
The spokesperson also appreciated the role of Pakistani media for demonstrating responsibility and professionalism during sensitive diplomatic developments.
