A brief 5-second appearance in the Bollywood film PK has dramatically changed the life of a real beggar, Manoj Rai.

Manoj Rai was selected from eight real beggars for a minor role in Rajkumar Hirani’s 2014 blockbuster starring Aamir Khan. In the short scene, he appears as a blind beggar standing on a roadside bridge holding a stick and begging bowl, before interacting briefly with the lead character PK.

Although his screen time lasted only a few seconds, Manoj was paid around 16,000 rupees for the role — a turning point that later transformed his life.

Coming from a very poor background in Assam’s Sonitpur district, Manoj lost his mother at a young age and left school after grade five due to financial hardship. He later moved to Delhi, where he began begging for survival, even pretending to be blind to attract sympathy.

His life took a major turn when film scouts noticed him during street casting. After a quick selection process, he was taken to a five-star hotel in Delhi for filming, an experience he later described as surreal compared to his earlier living conditions.

Following the success of PK, Manoj left begging behind and returned to his village, where he opened a small grocery store. He now runs the shop and has reportedly also explored opportunities in regional films.

Locals in his village still recognize him for his brief but life-changing appearance in the film, which he says gave him dignity and a new direction in life.
