ISTANBUL: Huge public protests have been taking place in several Turkish cities against the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Akram Oglu.
According to foreign media, protests were held in various cities of Turkey for the third day against the arrest of Akram Oglu.
The protesters and police clashed in Istanbul and Izmir. In Izmir, police shelled protesters, fired rubber bullets and water cannon, and arrested more than 300 protesters.
On the other hand, according to court documents, the arrested mayor has rejected all charges, including corruption.
The mayor of Istanbul was detained on Wednesday on corruption and terrorism charges. Oglu is the main contender for the slot of the president of Turkey and has gained huge popularity against President Ordogan.
