Re-approaching Covid-19

By: Zubair Ahmad

As Corona Virus hit our planet last year very badly and its prone are still unfortunately to be continued, according to the figures released by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the number of active Covid-19 cases is 9,500 this month, compared to just over 6,000 cases last month. Federal Minister and head of NCOC Asad Umar said that the daily Covid-19 mortality rate in the first week of October had climbed to 12, which is a 140 per cent increase as compared to earlier.

Similarly, the Pakistan Medical Association has also sounded the alarm, while saying that people’s relaxed and frivolous attitudes may cause an increase in infections.
However, this clearly bodes of a crippling and re-approaching second wave of fatal and, so far, incurable pandemic.

Recent rising grim figures is much alarming. Although, the government handled the pandemic during summers effectively and timely which avoided a disastrous situation in our country which is commendable, but, having said so, we should not be adopting a lax attitude towards it.

Because, climbing of epidemic in the winter is much likely compared to that of summers as smog levels increase and respiratory illnesses are triggered in this season. People with such illnesses are too vulnerable to coronavirus attack.
Our collective non-serious attitude towards pandemic is shocking.

As the opposition 11 party allaince Pakistan Democratic Movement’s (PDM) rallies, general public gatherings are in full swing. Wedding functions, political rallies, protestations in various cities, conferences and government-held events are taking place as if the coronavirus pandemic is a thing of the past.

In spite of all stark warnings from concerned authorities and Prime Minister himself time and again, violation of SOPs are continued almost everywhere.
Since we have prevented its spread and disaster and escaped a cataclysmic situation during summers due to commendable preventive measures and timely lockdowns and bans, it never means it is over.

If we continue to ignore the basic SOPs like, social distancing, sanitizing and proper face-masking, we are going to face a second wave of it most likely. It can not only snatch the lives but livelihoods as well.

Though the government officials continue to be issuing the warning messages on Twitter, Media, and other public platforms, mere reprimands are not enough. In order to prevent an all-out disaster, all the relevant officials must re-energize the messaging and build on the strength which can help lower infections in the first round, lest it sleepwalk into a disaster being faced in US, India and other countries, which will have a catastrophic impact on the health of citizens, healthcare sector and of course the economy.

It is a high time we adhered strictly to the SOPs given by the authorities to abstain any horrific scenario in upcoming winters. Responsibility heaps on each one of us to put in our part in awareness creation within our respective social circles. Because, we can only defeat this merciless fatal virus head on mutually and collectively before it is too late.
