BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for stronger cooperation with the United States, saying both countries should act as partners rather than rivals.

Speaking at a state banquet held in honor of visiting US President Donald Trump, Xi described the visit as historic and emphasized the importance of building a forward-looking relationship between the two global powers.

He noted that ties between China and the US have evolved significantly over decades, recalling the landmark diplomatic opening initiated by Henry Kissinger more than half a century ago.

Xi added that cooperation between the two nations serves global interests, while confrontation would be damaging. He added that both countries are capable of advancing their own development while working together for mutual benefit.

The Chinese leader said both sides agreed on the need to strengthen strategic cooperation and guide bilateral relations toward a more stable and constructive direction.

Trump, in his remarks, thanked China for the warm reception and described the day as significant for US-China relations. He said discussions with Xi were highly positive and constructive, focusing on trade, economic cooperation, and long-term engagement.

He also invited Xi to visit the United States later this year, signaling continued diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
