ISLAMABAD: The United States Embassy in Islamabad hosted a FIFA World Cup 2026™ kickoff event, bringing together diplomats, sports officials, athletes, and corporate partners to mark the countdown to the global tournament set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker described the World Cup as a powerful force for international unity, calling football “the world’s game” that transcends borders and languages. She emphasized the role of sport in strengthening people-to-people ties and said the tournament would help deepen cultural and diplomatic connections between nations, including Pakistan.

The event featured representatives from the Pakistan Football Federation, along with officials and partners supporting football development in the country. It was highlighted as the first World Cup launch event of its kind held in Pakistan.

Baker acknowledged the contributions of international sponsors including McDonald’s and Coca-Cola, noting their investment in local communities through job creation and economic engagement. She also praised Pakistan-based manufacturer Forward Sports, highlighting its role in producing footballs used in global competitions and her recent visit to its production facility in Sialkot.

“Football is the world’s game because it speaks a universal language—one of teamwork, determination, discipline, and hope,” Baker said, adding that the sport inspires young people to pursue their ambitions.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the first edition to feature 48 teams and will be hosted across 16 cities in North America. Millions of fans are expected to travel to matches across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Baker also framed the tournament as part of a broader “American Decade of Sport,” referencing upcoming major events such as the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. She said these events would strengthen economic ties and cultural exchange between participating nations.

The remarks also echoed U.S. leadership messaging that the tournament represents an opportunity to showcase the country ahead of its 250th independence anniversary. Former President Donald Trump was cited as having described the World Cup as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to highlight the United States on the global stage.

The event concluded with a call for continued collaboration through sports diplomacy, youth engagement, and international partnerships leading up to the tournament.
