UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a landmark resolution tabled by Pakistan and Denmark, aimed at strengthening accountability for crimes committed against UN peacekeepers.
The resolution received the support of all 15 members of the Security Council and was co-sponsored by 153 UN Member States—the highest number of co-sponsorships ever received by a Security Council resolution.
The overwhelming backing reflects the international community’s strong commitment to ensuring justice for attacks against UN peacekeepers and reinforcing the safety and security of personnel serving in peace operations worldwide.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN, introduced the resolution.
Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Asim said he was most grateful to all Security Council members for the consensual adoption of resolution 2823 on “Accountability for Crimes Against Peacekeepers” .
“I thank Denmark for our strong partnership as the Council’s ‘peacekeeping duo’.”
The ambassador added: “Our deep appreciation and profound thanks also to over 153 UN Member States co-sponsoring this UNSC resolution, a new record, that sends a strong and unambiguous message of support for UN peacekeeping.”
The Council stands solidly and resolutely behind the peacekeepers that are serving the cause of international peace under its mandates. There will be no impunity for attacks against UN peacekeepers and the perpetrators of such crimes will be held to account.
Accountability is essential for justice, deterrence, and the safety and security of all Blue Helmets and the Security Council will make sure that it is delivered, he noted.
“This important resolution signifies our highest tribute to all peacekeepers serving under the UN flag,” the ambassador remarked.
