US asks its citizens to remain vigilant during polls in Pakistan

Advisory issued by US embassy in Islamabad asks Americans to avoid areas of large public gatherings.

ISLAMABAD: The US embassy in Islamabad has asked American citizens living in Pakistan to be vigilant of locations of political rallies as the February 8th general elections near.

“On February 8 elections day areas around polling stations may be crowded and US citizens not eligible to participate in Pakistan’s elections should avoid them,” the embassy said in an advisory.

It warned disruptions in internet and cellular services throughout elections day and immediately afterwards.

“Public gatherings have the potential to block traffic, disrupt transportation and otherwise create obstacles to free movement and safety,” the embassy added. In some instances, political activities in Pakistan have been targeted for violence.”

US citizens were asked to avoid areas of large public gatherings and exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of a large gathering or demonstration.

The US embassy asked its citizens to review their personal security plans and monitor local media for updates. Americans were also asked to keep a low profile and carry identification.

The US and other countries frequently issue guidelines for their citizens living in or planning to visit other countries.

Security situation in Pakistan has been quite tense especially in the Khyber Pakthunkhwa and Balochistan provinces with terror elements attacking security forces.

To ensure foolproof security during the upcoming general elections, the government has decided to deploy the army and paramilitary forces across the country to assist the police and other law enforcement agencies.
