NEW YORK: The United Nations Security Council has called an emergency meeting on Saturday to discuss the situation in Gaza.

According to Arab media, the meeting was requested by 14 out of the 15 member states, while the United States opposed the move.

It comes after the Israeli cabinet’s decision to take full control of Gaza, following which deadly attacks on Palestinians continued on Friday. Israeli airstrikes killed 36 people, including 11 who were waiting for aid.

Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that in the past 24 hours, four more Palestinians have died of hunger, raising the death toll from starvation to 201. Meanwhile, a child was seriously injured after being struck by an aid box.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has sharply deteriorated in recent weeks, with aid agencies warning that food, clean water, and medical supplies are running critically low. Blockades and ongoing military operations have severely hampered relief efforts.

International human rights groups have urged the UN to take immediate action, warning that the crisis risks escalating into a full-scale humanitarian catastrophe if urgent measures are not implemented.
