LAHORE: The speaker of Punjab Assembly, Malik Ahmad Khan, has suspended 26 members of the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for 15 assembly sittings.
The action was taken after ruckus in the House involving shouting slogans, scuffles, and tearing official documents.
During a press conference on Saturday, the speaker announced he would also send a reference against these 26 lawmakers to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) the same day.
He said maintaining the dignity and order of the House was his responsibility. While acknowledging the right to protest, he stressed that it must remain within constitutional and legal limits. “We cannot allow the system to be held hostage,” he said. “If a member refuses to follow the rules, it is my duty to stop them from entering the House. You cannot start throwing books at other members.”
