Riverbank Residents In Sindh Told to Evacuate as Flood Approaches

KARACHI: The government of Sindh has asked people living in katcha (riverine) areas of the Indus River to evacuate immediately before the arrival of a powerful flood surge.

In his statement, Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon warned that the floodwaters which caused devastation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab are now moving toward Sindh. He confirmed that a major surge is approaching Guddu Barrage and stressed that very little time remains for families living along the riverbanks to relocate.

“The Sindh government has completed all preparations to tackle the flood situation,” Memon said. He called on people living close to the river to leave without delay and emphasized that relief camps have been established to provide shelter and assistance.

Officials fear that widespread destruction could occur if residents ignore evacuation calls, as water levels on the Indus River continue to rise rapidly.
