BANGKOK: The Myanmar military has launched a major crackdown on online fraud centers and rescued hundreds of foreign nationals, including 38 Pakistanis.
According to Thai authorities, the Thai Army crossed the Myanmar border and rescued the 38 Pakistanis trapped in fraud compounds.
Officials transferred them to the Bangkok Immigration Center, where they will be deported in phases. Thai authorities have formally informed the Government of Pakistan about the operation through an official letter.
The Thai government confirmed that another 60 Pakistanis are currently staying in a shelter house after escaping similar fraud centers inside Myanmar.
Bangkok has urged Pakistani authorities to investigate the deported individuals and take strict action against the agents involved. It has also requested Pakistan to place the deported persons on the Exit Control List (ECL) for five years.
Meanwhile, FIA officials in Pakistan said Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia have emerged as major hubs for online scam operations.
Fraud networks lure young job seekers through online advertisements offering call-center jobs and work visas. Once the victims arrive, agents confiscate their documents, detain them and force them to work in online fraud schemes.
The FIA has advised Pakistani citizens to remain cautious and avoid falling prey to deceptive job offers and fake overseas employment opportunities designed by international trafficking networks.
